I dunno...

Anyone who knows anything about Mars or Gilbert Levin should have
thought twice before accepting a claim by him.

The sad thing is, for me at least this does lessen New Scientist's ability
to bring serious science news to the masses. How many times has it
been shown that standing liquid water cannot exist on Mars? Yes, it
does look like some liquid H2O made it to the surface briefly in very
recent times, but it did not survive in that state.

And worst of all, no one bothered to check that the "puddles" were
actually on a slope! And coloring them blue - that still amazes me,
just not in a good way.

As for Levin, if he ever had any credibility, it has been faded for a long
time now. Sure, lots of people would like to find life on Mars and
elsewhere, but to jump at anything only ends you up in the Hoagland
camp. And you do not want to summer there.
