Reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's short work The Star

Where an expedition to an alien solar system wiped out by its sun
going supernova turns out to have been the Star of Bethlehem, and
how the mission crew comes to realize that one of the defining events
in human history was jump started by the death of another star, which
wiped out an alien civilization in the process.
