Imagine that instead of rovers they were Mars Direct astronauts trying to grow food and keep warm. Global dust storms like this could be a real bummer for astronauts waiting for the planets to align to return home.
Nuclear energy for life critical systems and a 3-4 month emergency supply of food should be mandatory. And of course space systems design to withstand dust contamination or really good seals against it. . I also wonder if you would be able to launch or land safety through a storm like this. Is there any evidence of electrical energy with the high winds?
Dust storms like this are probably going to be the biggest hazard to overcome on Mars. I hope the rovers survive to record the details and the aftermath from the ground.
