The reason Mars has such bad dust storms now

Is due to the lack of vegetation to hold in the soil and large amounts of liquid water.

The eons of wind and other forces wearing the rocks and regolith down to a very
fine powder has also contributed to why so much dust gets kicked into the Martian air.

Terraforming should solve that problem, among a host of others.
