- The public might get a shared catharsis out of it and feel that the reason for all the crazy executive shit is dealt with (and not blame conservatives in general for it).

- Cheney would have an opportunity to step forward as a calming and mature figure. He could go a long way towards healing the wounds of the country and repairing the effects of his own bad press. [Of course, he would probably not do so. This benefit is likely just a phantasy.]

- Conservatives would have the opportunity to do some or all of the housecleaning that is necessary in the executive branch. They could get credit - in time for the elections - for doing the right thing.

- Other conservative statesmen might step forward to the VP and to other vacated spots and make a name for themselves as trustworthy politicians. There is still plenty of time for new presidential candidates to come out of the process (just in case you guys aren't thrilled with Rudy).
