I'm just speculating here,
But it appears to me that type of construction would be extremely strong and very light (which would in turn add to its strength), but would be very vulnerable to a single-point-of-failure type malfunction. The stresses would be effectively distributed throughout the entire latticework and then transferred out, but if one bolt or weld was defective and sheared the entire structure would be threatened because there is no redundancy in the support structure. It is only as strong as its weakest link. My guess is it is cheaper to build but much more expensive to properly maintain than other support structures.
