Man it seems like there would be a lot of money in salvaging sets and letting people tour them as an attraction. Imagine walking onto the BSG bridge or even hanging out in the Lost hatch.
Physical sets have their limitations though. Sometimes they don't have a 4th wall which would have to be created wholecloth. Similarly a lot needs to be inferred and created for the virtual set. What shocked me most about the Enterprise D Virtual Tour was the enormity of the shuttle bay. I never would have guessed it was so huge from the show. However it makes sense in hindsight.
The hangar deck in BSG was done much better in show. When watching the show I always felt like that was a big ass hangar. I guess they were just better at the greenscreen illusions than Star Trek was.
