Clearly, any rational approach to NEOs requires extensive in situ study of NEOs BEFORE alternative deflection technologies are selected. Of course I'm assuming there's time to do so, which in this example, there's plenty. On the other hand, potential deflection technologies should not be de facto ruled out because some weenies think they're not PC.
