We rented for years before we bought a house. When we moved, we rented again for a while before buying another house (we had not lived in the first house long enough to make a big profit on it). In fact, the house I own now is the one I was renting.
Used to be it was a given that you'd be in a rented place for quite a while before you'd dive into home ownership. Somehow people have gotten the idea that, like the corner office and expense account, home ownership is something you have a right to the moment you get out of college.
I will say that renting forever isn't all that good, either. There are definite advantages to home ownership if you plan to stay in one place a while, and can get into the market with both feet firmly planted under you.
