You beat me to it...
I've been watching these guys for a while now and they're making huge strides. The first episode had awesome digital effects and some pretty horrid acting. They're actually trying to reverse the situation: creating digital effects that resemble the more primitive fx of the original series, and better acting.
Actor Tim Russ (Tuvok from ST Voyager) is also making Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. I can't help but wonder how the rise of these sorts of "unofficial" projects influenced Paramount's decision to underwrite a new ST movie. "There's money in them thar stars..."
Now if I could just get them to reverse their cancellation of Enterprise, I'd be one happy Trekker.
