Islamic contradiction

It was revealed when the latest OBL tape emerged that dying the beard is commonplace among Muslims.

This seems to be a demonstration of vanity and is not characteristic of fundamentalist Muslim thinking as I percieve it.

I wonder if it is really true that they commonly dye their beards? I would see the reasoning as exceptional to make him appear healthier.
