We now live in an information age where people, if they're willing to go to a little effort, no longer have to accept single-source information, either from government or industry. I believe a nuclear power industry could be developed that has enough oversight--from several sources--to keep us all informed.
It's worth remembering that those who run nuclear power plants aren't all that eager to have them blow up either. I can look around myself on any given day, and there are countless things I use or am around that would kill me dead if they were not properly built or operated. I count on the designers, builders, and, yes, inspectors to keep me safe for the most part.
There are over 400 nuclear reactors operating around the world, most of them for many years. When you ask someone to list serious accidents, most people will come up with Chernobyl and Three-Mile-Island, only one of which cost lives on a wide scale (although it should be noted that there have been other individual fatalities associated with other nuclear power plant incidents).
Compared to that, the risks associated with coal-fired plants, particulates, and pollution effects are much larger.
I call this a no-brainer, and wish the government and industry would get on the stick.
