Conservatives could have and did enact any legislation they liked during the first 6 years of the Bush Regime. Including whatever program for universal health care they wanted. If they didn't like what Democrats wanted, they could have picked their own. Didn't even try. Didn't think of it. Not affordable. Any more than Social Security was affordable, Medicare was affordable, Workers Compensation was affordable. Can't be done. More Americans lacked health insurance in 2006 than in 2000. That is a measure of Conservative values.
Instead, they cut taxes for the very, very wealthy. And they chose to fund a war to the ultimate benefit of oil companies, with the support of those with a religious agenda. (It was Saudi Arabian people and money who were responsible for 9-11, not Iraqis, facts which seem to completely escape Conservatives.) In the quest for "stability" in the Middle East, Bush has destabilized the area and created a world-class quagmire, desperately riding the tiger to avoid blame for the inevitable mauling which will come when someone sane climbs off. And at enormous cost in life, money, prestige, and moral leadership. I don't think anyone who can read will doubt that. Another measure of Conservative values, principles.
As far as "other people's money" is concerned, I would rather see my money purchase preventative health care for Americans than used to slaughter, torture and maim Iraqis. To no avail. (Not even killing, torturing or maiming Saudis, who, by the way, sponsored the terrorism used as the excuse for the war. Remember?)
I'd rather see my money spent upon medical research, than on napalm, white phosphorous, etc. I'd rather buy a safer, healthier place.
On the other hand, there are Conservatives.
