Then why doesn't he carry that liberal NYC message to the rest of the country?
Because he knows it doesn't play well in 3/4 of the country. He's had to move to the middle and away from the left on this issue to gain any real chance of winning nationwide. It's the main reason I won't vote for the man. He's a political opportunist and will say whatever it takes to win. When a politician picks up that bad habit, it's time to find someone else. I prefer to vote for men with conviction and backbone.
