Intellectual debate was born in ancient Greece.
It's too bad debate [live, on radio, on TV]
has degenerated into name-calling, flaming and rude interuption.
Ancient Greek debate however was based on the principle of
allowing an articulate, intelligent person to expound their rhetorical "thesis", followed by an opponent [or naysayer]
who responded afterwards with an "anthesis"....
This was ideally intented to lead to a "synthesis" of those
opposing concepts, involving a compromise or crossbreeding
of the differing ideas expressed.
Too bad society has become increasingly intolerant
of opposing ideas, instead of synthesizing them into
or with those ideas one holds dear.
