I'm as big or more a fan of nuclear than most, and yet I realize there are still lots of untried reliable methods for generation of power en masse.
Ocean current electrical generators, geo-magnetic induction electrical generation, induced lightning generators, volcanic-vent generators, etcetera.
What we are seeing is a wholesale lack of ingenuity, creativity, intelligence and, perhaps most importantly, proper funding of the better prototype mousetraps.
We may have electricity - but make no mistake about it, these decades are still the neanderthal, industrial revolution dark ages compared to whats coming, and folks will wonder how anyone could live so stagnantly, in such primitive squalor and with such individual limited resources and mental perspectives.
But then again, one doesn't give sharp knives to little babies. One has to wait for them to mature and conceive the proper usage of all these things. Unlimited power in the wrong hands would be sure destruction of our civilized world.

It's not just coal or nuclear.
