I suspect, although I have no data on this, that a lot of this might be driven by the extensive ownership of mutual funds. Somebody trying to "dump" when the market is going south will dump a whole fund, which naturally would affect stocks inside it.
Most of what I own in stocks is broadly diversified mutual funds. I have a few individual stocks, but mostly for the amusement value.
