A prototype orbiting solar-energy plant may still prove useful.

If experiments show that beaming down microwaves
of enormous power are environmentally unacceptable
and financially unviable...

Then I say attach a powerful laser to such an orbiting platform
for very-practical, even necessary functions, such as
[if required] destroying ballistic missiles from rogue nations [aka: Star Wars resurrected] and deflecting incoming NEO asteroids.

And finally, if opportunity and funding allows, propel gossamer-thin lightsail probes to nearby stars with a generation or a century...
I repeat these three potential uses of such an orbiting platform
to affirm that I remain all for it.

cheers.
