Energy balance

I've read somewhere that it is questionable whether solar panels recover enough energy over their lifetime to offset the energy used to manufacture them. In space, if a solar panel generates 5- or 6-times more energy per square meter, would that offset the cost of launching it? Why do I doubt it? But if someone is willing to spend the time and crunch the numbers I'll be happy to review them.
