Says something to those folks who keep saying "ask the military how we're doin' in Iraq".
Of course, there are the ever-political generals, such as Petraeus. And whatever happened to the guy who was supposed to be the Iraq "czar". The Lieutenant General who was supposed to translate political policy into military activity?
By the way, "Cobra II" does a splendid job of explaining how Rumsfeld dictated the troop levels for the invasion and occupation, and how there were never enough for either. The invasion worked, but would have anyway with the air power they had, and the occupation has been a complete failure.
The military wanted at least 200% of the current troop levels for the occupation, preferably more. Shinseki had it right, was shunted aside as puppets were found who would plan based upon Rumsfelds demands.
And then take the heat when Rumsfeld said he merely OKed the plans brought to him by the generals.
Didn't he say he wouldn't lie to the great folks of the US?

And it's in "Stars and Stripes"! Amazing.
