buy a new hard drive and reinstall everything fresh

While it sounds like a cop out tech support answer, my experience is its the best method.

Trust me on this, you will waste far too much time trying to get rid of it and in the end you will have failed. Spyware is too good at putting its hooks in and updating itself that you will never get it all. I have wasted many hours trying on some systems. Normally I just save off any data, then do a low level reformat of the hard drive. then I reinstall everything from scratch. Once all the protections are up to date and turned on, then I reinstall the data. This method is a pain in the ass, especially because winXP's lack of a service pack 3, so the updates take forever, but it is far better than spinning your wheels trying to clean out spyware and trojans.

If you don't feel comfortable doing a low level format just spend th $80 on a new HD and toss the old.
