The radiation from the hit would have spread quickly and would have been clearly detected around the world (just like the Soviet reactor melt down). A Russian satellite would have also detected the flash (if any of them are still up and I believe they are) if it was a penetrating warhead you would have had a unique earthquake wave that again would be detected.
Highly skeptical on that one
