And by the way, consider how much more teachers are being asked to do now than in 1960.
In 1960, how many students came to school with Fetal Aalcohol Syndrome? In wheelchairs? With severe "developmental delays"?
How many Grade 5 students were using drugs, or drinking regularly, or were active sexually?
How many children in an average, all-American classroom had both parents? And a stay-at-home mom?
How much were kids exposed to violence on TV, movies, and video games?
Hom many teachers were threatened with physical violence, or lawsuits, if they dared to infringe upon a parent's right to discipline their child?
How often was the classroom the only safe and orderly place in a child's life? How often was their teacher the only person in their world that they could count on not to beat them or belittle them?
I'm not saying the education system is perfect, but it's not realistic to compare it to the way it was in 1960.

It's not 1960 any more.
