It's happened before.
Leaders of ancient Rome slaughtered upwards of 5,000 people per day in their coliseums for "sport". And the people came in droves. Are we a society just repeating itself?
I agree totally with you, that these video games create open doorways in people's psyche that allow desensitation to suffering and violence. I worried about this 10 years ago when my son played his first virtual game of hunting to kill his "enemies" (I forget the name now). Barely 14, he would wake up with nightmares that he WAS being hunted, and that he was headless.
To some degree, I think Internet porn is souless too.
Not that it can't be viewed or indulged in on occasion, but that asocial people become conditioned to express their sexual fantasies in the most bizarre fashion, giving rise to rapes and homosexuality. They are unable to form relationships in real time based on care and trust, and now you have a whole generation of kids who flaunt their sexuality........perhaps as the Romans did?
We could take this further with the heavy metal bands and their followers, where unstable minds are pushed into the anti-social range by the lyrics. All of this started to come about by the laws passed over a decade ago allowing freedom of expression. As more and more kids become latch-key because of working or dis-interested parents, you have a whole group of unwholesome kids growing up with a whole set of different morals than the ones I grew up with a decade or two before them. And this group preys upon the weak or vulnerable in this society. And they got that way by supporting the slimy undergrowth of bottom feeders who make money by capitalizing on violence and debauchery.
