Windmills, geodesic domes, solar powered tipis? No, I don't see that in our future at all, that's a Sierra Club wet dream. No, what I see is cold water sixth floor walk-ups and sharing bathrooms, and 4 hours of brownout electricity a day and everyone going around a couple of meals behind schedule. And cops and soldiers on every corner to keep order. This ain't something that can be taken care of by fiddling with the interest rates or by cutting red tape, or by instituting a public relations campaign.
Remember the definition of energy from physics? Energy is the ability to do work. It is the one commodity which when it is no longer available makes all the others irrelevant. We won't have to conserve, the juice will just stop flowing and we won't have any choice about it.
This is Rapa Nui, Chaco Canyon, every place that thought it had it all until one day, the rain stopped, or the last tree was cut down.
