re: So what's the problem?

The outsourcing.

Let's look at a future scenario. If you find your drone "speeding ticket" automatically deducted from your online bank account (don't say it can't happen), how can you prove you weren't speeding? In traffic court, you can wait and show up and protest it. If the cop shows up, he has to have proof his radar was recently calibrated. Then the judge decides.

These will be automated, and if a fee is involved for the company, who is to stop them from getting DOT records and picking random license plates for fines to boost fines? (Perhaps to help pay for the "service"?) I see the possibility of abuse here.

You may say this won't happen, and that it's illegal, but I already ran into another form of DOT "outsourcing" while I was up in Canada this past summer.

There are highways up there that drivers need to have "transponders" on their cars to be able to freely drive them. (ETR or Express Toll Route). As they enter or exit these ramps, their transponder is recorded by cameras mounted on the underpasses. I have travelled these roads before with different car rentals. There is no "toll booth" to stop and pay your fee, and because I am not an Ontario resident, I haven't applied for (nor got) one of these transponders. Usually, when I return the rental car, the charge appears on my bill. Ocassionally, I would see an additional $6 fee a month later from the rental car company on my credit card. Imagine my shock, when I got a bill for $36 for travelling about 60 miles on one of these freeways. The rental car company no longer handles these fees.

So, first of all there is a $10 fee they charge the rental car company for their serice, and then they tack on a $20 fee because they have to bill you, because you didn't have a responder. I actually called the company and there was nothing I could do about it.

My second worry would be having these drones ARMED. And controlled remotely by some dude in a office with an itchy finger. The million dollar pricetag on those are probably for the ones that come armed. I mean look at the abuse of tasers already, just for parking tickets.
Google them, and be prepared to see how easily abuse starts.

This one really pissed me off. The cop actually pulls over AT the speed limit sign while someone passes him, then refuses to follow legal procedure. Make like it's you in this <position.> The cop should be fired.
