Weimar Amerika

I suppose being a little bit more courteous, sensitive or respectful to people who are not like us is what passes for excessive liberal "political correctness" in Trump Nation. No one can accuse bullies and thugs of being politically correct. They're tough, they don't take no shit from crips and retards.

But let's be fair. There are Liberal assholes too. Bad taste or sheer meanness is not a Republican, or even Conservative monopoly.

What I find upsetting about the Trump phenomenon is not the man himself, reprehensible as he may be, but the broad and deep acceptance and support he has received on the American Right. He has millions of followers, and even those who may not vote for him in the end are still winking and nudging and quietly celebrating how he dares say what they dare not. This is how fascism (oops, I said it again!) started in Germany, and this is how it seems to be gaining ground here. Everybody there thought Hitler was a joke and that the Nazis were politically useful, but a tool which could be used, managed, and eventually put away when no longer needed.

Perhaps too little and too late, some Conservatives are now starting to turn on Trump, not so much for his excesses, but because he now threatens to alienate independent voters and moderate Republicans. In other words, he is becoming an embarrassment to the Party, a strategic liability rather than an insult to god. But what led to Trump, the insults, obstruction and sabotage directed at Obama, birtherism, Muslim insults and Socialist slanders, death panels, and all the rest made him, and his torch and pitchfork mob of disciples, possible. And when that was happening, the responsible, moderate, Republicans were all looking the other way, tying their shoelaces, lighting their cigarettes, clearing their throats and pretending nothing was happening on their far Right.

That's what I find really upsetting. Not Trump, not even his sleazebag groupies, but those who could have spoken up sooner but didn't.
