Both politicians and conservative journalists and pundits. But most did not.
But by now the lunatic fringe has taken over a big enough piece of the GOP that any attempt to fight them is political suicide. Moderate Republicans are either passed over, dismissed as RINOs or squishy, or are forced to drift Right and go with the flow.
That's what happened to John McCain.
But the wingnut right did not just appear out of nowhere, it was cultivated and encouraged by "the moderates", and allowed to flourish by their silence as they unleashed it on Obama. Now they'll have to deal with them.
I'm reminded of a quote I heard the other day, I can't remember the speaker of the context, but it certainly applies here.
"I can understand the screams of my enemies, but not the silence of my friends."
