re: Spirit future (sporty)

The actual 1 day record is around 220m by Opportunity, with 6 working wheels on flat terrain, with lots of power.

Spirit is essentially in a 'survival' mode for 9 months out of every 24 for winter.

Spirit also has one broken wheel - since then they've not managed more than about 20m in any one sol.

Spirit also rarely has more than 400 Whrs even in Summer because of how dirty it is - it's a variable, but it's been low since they left Husband hill. It dropped and dropped until last winter to the point where survival was possible, and nothing else. It peaked, very briefly, before the dust storm took away most of the summer - but they've had a couple of months of reasonable power in the past 2 years- the sort of power required to even attempt long drives.

Totally ignoring the science stops - just based on experience of Spirit as it is now - working 5 day weeks ( which is all the budget can afford ) - 100-200m/week would be good progress during the summer months.

Von Braun is only a couple of hundred metres away - but they decided that was too far based on how long they had to get to a winter resting place this time around.

Talking about journeys of several 10's of Km's is just fiction I'm afraid.
