We had old "Reader's Digest" school readers in Fourth Grade and one story we read was Clarke's "So You're Going to Mars" (originally from 1953) - I think the Reader was from 1966, with lots of cool illustrations. Inspired me ever after, but I didn't realise it was a Clarke story until I read it as collected in "Report on Planet Three".
