You're right Tom

At least partially.

We in the 'First World' live in absurd luxury from a historical standpoint.

Many others do not.

I am keenly aware that there are simply insufficient resources on this planet for the entire world to live as we do. And we'd wreck this planet beyond belief if we tried.

That aside, today there's not the threats we faced in the past. Disease, starvation, barbarian hordes. Total annihilation from missiles flying is a fading threat. That has been replaced by a wider danger as smaller and smaller fringe groups find ways to kill more and more people in a single attack.

Now we face raw materials shortages, energy shortages, water shortages. All of which will increase the price and the supply of food in the long run.

Never forget, the world is tiny now.

An event on the other side of the world often has a direct effect on our lives here.
