The Bad Astronomer caught that too

Yup, if a reporter and science editor with limited science
background and apparently even poorer writing skills messes
up a story and the reading public misinterprets what is going
on, it must be the public's fault.

Thankfully there were people like Phil Plat and Paul Gilster of
Centauri Dreams who actually acted like reporters are supposed
to and got the real scoop on what was really a non-story in
terms of SETI.

But apparently there was a very interesting and very brief
natural radio burst from somewhere about 3 billion light years
from Earth. Just because aliens probably weren't involved
(and if they were, then whoever it is/was has some serious
energy levels in their control) doesn't mean this wasn't an
interesting story in and of itself.

Details on the real story can be found here:

So when in the future, and you know it will happen again,
a news outlet writes a misleading and outright incorrect
story and then blames the public for not getting its facts
straight, we can say they pulled a KTVUer.
