This very well could be bad advice but when bedding down, I'd leave the chamber empty and the safety off and if you feel the need, rack the gun.
This does two things; although not as effective as a 12ga pump, the sound might be enough of deterent to make em turntail. It will also keep you from being shot by your dog (it happens!).
