To finish the analogy
God becomes a place holder for the entities that consist of cooperating individuals--which we could currently ascribe to religious cults, clans, or any other grouping of mass mind "hive" behavior. We seek to know the mind of this "god" in order to know what actions are deemed cooperative and what are not (sins). We are currently rapidly accerating the evolution of our mass mind "beings" through incredible improvements of communication, sensors, and adjunct intelligence (e.g AI). It is as if the nervous systems and brains of our "greater good god beings" are evolving in modern times.
