Is the discovery of silica deposits found by Spirit near Home Plate:

The MER scientists say the silica came either from ancient
hot springs, or that hot steam rose up through cracks in the
surface and wore away the minerals, leaving the silica.

Either way hot springs are usually great locations for thriving microbes,
at least on Earth. And silica has the bonus ability of preserving
such things as microbes.

Outside of them finding actual fossils or microbes, now THAT
is real news from Mars via the rovers.
