Thank you all. Very generous of you.
And I've scoured Newegg for the components. An AMD quad-core, heatsink and fan, MB, 4GB memory, and nice video card comes to $600 flat. Another $100 or so for an OS at Amazon (I'll probably go to a 64-bit Vista on the recommendation of friends), and that should do it.
I put a 600W PSU in the one I have, with all manner of fancy connectors, so that should do it. I could buy a very nice ready-made unit and video card for that price, but, well, I guess for the money I'm too interested in trying to build it myself, and I'd like the hotter unit.
I plan on using one of the HDs I have for Linux, if I can figure a way to choose one or the other upon booting up.
Thanks again. I had no idea.
