The judgment was for nearly a billion dollars, which would supposedly be taken out of a frozen funds asset of about $1.7 billion. That is quite a financial hit. The entire Iraq GDP, last time I looked, is in the $40 to $50 billion range. A billion is a fairly large chunk of this for a single claim, particularly if it opens the legal door for many other such claims.

This isn't as straightforward as it looks. I also think these people should be compensated for what happened to them, but maybe some better deal can be worked out. Payments over time, or a more rational total compensation number. And it has to be worked out in the larger legal area of compensation demands from many other sources.

Not sure what's "awkward" about it. It is a mess.
