In the course of a lifetime countless decisions are made which alter the direction of a person's life. None of the candidates running, however, have faced the type of choice John McCain had. After being a POW for five years, the North Vietnamese started releasing the prisoners as the war winded down. McCain's dad was a big wig and pulled some strings to get John released ahead of some other POWs. John McCain, siting in some godforesaken prison in SE Asia, thousands of miles from home, having suffered tourture and other abuses for five long years, said NO. He said, this other guy has been here longer and he deserves to go first. McCain waited months longer for his turn to be released.
To me, what this says about John McCain is that he is a man of tremendous character. To make a decision like that shows he will put his country ahead of himself. In many ways that is why he is a maverick. He will do what he thinks is best for America despite what the far right fringe thinks.
The defining moment of a lifetime
