Some of the problems with newer versions of QT probably come from its being the core of Apple's online store, iTunes, with all that "digital rights management" and tracking crap. I made the mistake of installing iTunes a while back, and the damn thing tried to take over my computer. It set itself up as the default player for all media types and refused to let go, and every time I turned around it was trying to "catalog" all the media on my computer...no doubt so that it could send all the info to Apple to see if anything is copyrighted. I uninstalled it (and I can only hope it's actually gone).
Unfortunately, unlike the other guys, I don't have the option of refusing to use QuickTime. Among other reasons, I sometimes need to produce video for Web sites, and it has to be QT to be viewable for people using the Mac. It's not a very good format, really--I get better quality at higher compression using Windows Media. But while Mac users are only a tiny minority, they're a loud minority.
