On the side of Dog Mountain, in the Columbia Gorge on the Washington side of the Columbia River, there are three anthills. They are large, the biggest about 40 to 44 inches in height, maybe 7 or 8 feet across depending upon where you measure.
I have foregone my hike on occasion to watch those animals. I'll drop food (manna) from the sky on them and see what they do and who does it.
And I have to admit I think of myself as one of those ants, a ridiculous ant, an egomaniacal ant. I believe I know how to run the entire damned hill, the ants in it, the entire show.
With just the perspective of one of those ants who lives on one little part and has taken part in one of the raiding expeditions.
For a short while it lets me know where I really, really stand. Until I forget and start posting here again. Thanks for the reminder.
