4 years before Gorbachev arrived to power.

I don't remember discussions about the SU economic state before Gorbachev openly admitted them. He could have just shut up like his predecessors. He didn't and that in itself was very courageous.

Nowadays, the US depends on China (which never went to the same changes Russia knew), a communist country where freedoms are far from what the former eastern block countries are today.
