Plug it in, plug it in

I read in a news report today that the fuel cost savings achieved by operating an all-electric vehicle can recoup the purchase price in about two years. This doesn't make any sense, you don't get any more energy out of burning fossil fuel in a steam plant than you do in an internal combustion engine. The latter is not as efficient as the former, but you have powerline transmission and transformer losses which probably negate that advantage. I realize electric cars can "recycle" some kinetic energy from their induction braking, but certainly not enough to make them THAT much more efficient. I suspect that these colossal "savings" are realized simply because motor fuel is taxed differently than household electricity. Am I missing something?
