re: Plug it in, plug it in

This is a complicated issue, and nobody could come to a cost savings conclusion without looking at a LOT of variables.

An electric car is about twice as efficient at turning power into motion as a gasoline car, which can add up. Naturally, this doesn't count the costs involved of getting that power into the car, which involves a whole lot of crap for both gasoline and electricity.

We could also get into pollution externalities, costs and environmental issues of battery manufacture and disposal, and dozens of other things.

The main plus to me of electric cars bypasses all this.

If our transportation system becomes primarily electrical, it's the most effective way of reducing our oil requirements. Other than industrial and manufacturing, we hardly use oil for anything else. We could start eating our corn again. We could join France in telling the Middle East to start working on their tourist industry.

Of course this brings up where all that electricity will come from. I think you know where I want to go with that, but an electric car can run off anything that makes electricity. Coal, natural gas, nuclear, solar, windmill, fusion, or hamsters on a wheel. When we get breakthroughs on any of these fronts, and we will (Great Mambo Hamster!), our transportation system will be ready for it.
