What you're seeing now in the Democratic Party is the detonation of a set of political principles that have been a dog's breakfast for years. This is coming out now only because there's a "perfect storm" of primary candidates in Hillary and Obama, and the media is actually "discovering" things most of us have known for years.
The support for either Democrat is primarily emotional at this point. A lot of people have had fun reducing supporters to incoherent babbling by asking them detailed questions on policies. But who knows, maybe that will be enough to carry a candidate through to nomination. Winning the election? We'll see.
The Republicans aren't doing so hot either. The nominee is not really a Republican on many policies, but at least he is on some, which IMO is better than electing someone who ranks zero in those areas. Still, a lot of conservatives are very unhappy. Can a Republican win when Rush Limbaugh is holding his nose and making fun of the candidate? We'll see on that, too.
An amazing number of liberals are still making this all about Bush, which probably isn't going to work.
Things will heat up when the Democrat is finally picked, and the Democratic media quits the circular firing squad and turns as one to destroy McCain. This is why I'm not putting any weight on "McCain vs. whoever" polls circulating now.
A hint for everyone out there: Don't fall in love with a politician. They'll break your heart every time
