The night sky is our oldest companion.
Coming back to this thread, I don't understand how someone who's supposedly interested in space would not care about light pollution. Space is even darker than our nights, because of the light from the sun or its reflected light!
The night sky is amazing, it's what the HST needs to spot supernovae.
Darkness is shadow and light and shadow help us understand worlds, their shapes. The full moon doesn't show its surface details and it blocks our view of nearby stars. A crescent Moon lets stars be shown right next to it while the eartshine shows features on the surface.
The night sky isn't really about darkness but about faint objects.
In daylight, no one is aware of where we are and no wonder it took so long for our civilization to better understand our place in space and time.
The value of darkness
