This nation has TWO energy priorities: Energy independence and clean energy. No doubt the vast shale oil reserves in the US would solve one of those issues. Solving the other is the problem.

Don't discount what solar power could achieve. Solar panels on every roof in America. Solar battery powered street lights. The vast federal lands in NV have been proposed as a site for gigantic solar power plants. Creating super efficient solar cells would go a long way.
