Might want to wait just a bit

There are some amazing technologies that truly promise to bring down the cost of cells as well as batteries. Last I remember they were being developed by some western university and we pretty solid innovations in their final testing stages.

If you do go with a system, I'd recommend one that is not a complete replacement but a grid-tie system that simply supplements your existing service without any storage capability. You can start small and add on as you can afford it. Just ensure that the inverter that converts the DC from the cells to the AC in your home has sufficient wattage rating to add on later.

I'm definitely in the market as soon as I get my new A/C unit fully installed and working (wiring and plumbing the condenser unit right now). It's a 16 SEER unit replacing my ancient 10 SEER unit. Before any money is spent on a solar system it's wise to do all you can to lower the energy consumption of your home. Appliances today are so much more efficient. Also, insulation is cheap. If you have an attic, go to Home Depot or Lowes and rent an insulation blower and spend a day adding another foot or so to your existing setup. That cellulose blow in stuff is dirt cheap and the blower is relatively easy to use. The first year in our house our electrical bills peaked at over $500 during summer months. After the blow in insulation, we dropped a few hundred dollars off during those hot months.

If you have exterior walls that are in direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day plant trees or shubs along them. That can make a huge difference. Also, if your attic is not adequately ventilated, putting roof vents (you can even get ones with fans some solar powered) can also make a large difference.
