How some things work is amazing. I've ordered something which is being delivered via UPS. I've been able to track it through various cities along the way, and it was delivered today.

In order to check the front porch to see if it's here requires a short journey. I usually don't go near the front porch, it's for the guys who live upstairs. But I can find out if it's there by checking the UPS tracking site on the web. The driver scans the package and I guess that information is sent by cell phone or satellite to someplace which logs it. I can send electrons into the ether, or along the copper and glass to a site which is God-knows-where, and find out the thing is 20 feet away (if I go through several walls) faster than I can walk around.

I would never have believed it. Not for one instant. If anyone had claimed that was possible, not even happening but possible, I would have hooted and sniggered for an hour. And for today's kids that's normal.

Truly amazing.
