My Uncle Joe.

A bachelor, very bright, did mostly skilled manual labor all his life. I spent summers with him after my parents divorced at my age 10.

I was about 11 and Joe and I loaded up his utility trailer with boards. It was a blisteringly hot day, and I was glad to be done. Some of the boards stuck out quite a ways and Joe stuffed a red rag between a couple of them. I told him it wouldn't stay. He walked back to the car, which he called his "Jesus Chrysler". I got in, telling him again the rag wouldn't stay. He said nothing, but drove off.

I watched. The rag blew off. I laughed, and told him so. He kept driving. I told him again, and he finally pulled over, about 2 1/2 blocks from the rag.

"Go get it."

Joe was very bright and a bit vindictive.
