eBay announced today that they're shutting down their LiveAuctions service, effective the end of the year.
Why in the world should I care? Because in 2004-2005, in the course of a ten-month contract with eBay, I created the user interface for LiveAuctions. It's personal, and a little sad.
Technology always changes and moves on, and in the course of a long career I've built an awful lot of things that eventually died off, faded away, were killed, or didn't make it in the first place. About 3/4 of the companies listed on my resume no longer exist. LiveAuctions was probably the most high-profile thing I've built, so its passing has an extra degree of poignancy. It won't be the last, and actually I should hope it won't be the last.
And so it goes. RIP, LiveAuctions.
eBay LiveAuctions, RIP
